Bearman's qualifying lap deleted: FIA explains bizarre red flag confusion
Oliver Bearman's qualifying lap deleted, sparking controversy and FIA explanation
The FIA has provided a detailed explanation for the controversial deletion of Oliver Bearman's fastest lap during qualifying at Imola, which saw the Haas driver eliminated in Q1.
The Incident
Bearman recorded a time of 1:16.077 in Q1, a lap that would have seen him advance to Q2. However, the time was subsequently deleted, leaving him in 19th place.
Bearman's Reaction
Visibly frustrated, Bearman stated, "I believe it’s totally unfair to have it deleted. I feel like, once they make a decision – even if it’s wrong, clearly wrong – they’re not going to turn back on it." He added that no clear explanation was provided at the time, leaving both himself and the Haas team perplexed.
FIA's Explanation
The FIA clarified that the deletion was due to a red flag incident involving Franco Colapinto. According to the FIA's statement:
- The red flag condition was initiated at 16:32.17.6.
- Bearman crossed the finish line at 16:32.20.9, approximately 3.2 seconds after the red flag was displayed on the start gantry.
- The delay in Q2 was to allow stewards to consult timing experts and verify the data to ensure the correct decision was made regarding Bearman's lap.
Despite Haas vigorously disputing the decision, the stewards upheld the deletion after reviewing the evidence.
Impact on Bearman and Haas
Bearman expressed disappointment, noting that the deleted lap was a chance to showcase the team's new upgrades. "It’s the only chance we have to show it. I put a lap that’s representative and really get the most out of the car, and that’s what we have to show for it. It’s a big shame."
