Antonelli Edges Norris in Scrappy Dutch GP Practice
Kimi Antonelli continued his championship-leading form by topping a scrappy Dutch Grand Prix practice at Zandvoort, edging Lando Norris by 0.121 seconds in the weekend's only practice. The Mercedes driver set a 1m12.949s in the closing minutes after Norris briefly snatched first place, with George Russell four thousandths behind in third. Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc kept Ferrari in the hunt, leaving the top five covered by less than three tenths despite tricky conditions that forced an early swap from intermediates to slicks.
Why it matters:
The condensed sprint schedule gave teams just one hour to find a setup window on a circuit that began damp and improved almost every lap. With sprint qualifying looming, limited track time and evolving grip meant every clean lap was precious, yet multiple offs up and down the field made it a messy session for engineers.
The details:
- Changing conditions: The field initially rolled out on intermediate tyres, but the track dried rapidly and prompted an early switch to slicks, with benchmark times tumbling as grip levels increased.
- Front pack: Antonelli’s late flyer denied Norris, while Russell’s third place gave Mercedes two cars in the top three. Hamilton and Leclerc traded fastest times midway through before settling into fourth and fifth.
- Incidents: Antonelli survived a full spin at Turn 10 without damage. Carlos Sainz twice ran through the gravel at Turn 11 and later discovered floor damage that ended his session prematurely. Max Verstappen also had a gravel excursion, while Hamilton and Fernando Alonso both had moments at Turn 11.
- Driver swaps: Liam Lawson marked his return to Red Bull in 14th, while Yuki Tsunoda was back at Racing Bulls in 17th. Arvid Lindblad impressed by taking 10th for the Faenza squad.
What's next:
Sprint qualifying gets underway at 4:30pm local time, leaving teams minimal data to refine their cars for a single-lap shootout. Given the tight margins at the front and Zandvoort's unforgiving nature, any mistake in the shortened session could prove costly.
