Document 16 - Decision - Car 81 - Failure to follow Race Director's instructions - Fast Lane

To: The Team Manager, McLaren Formula 1 Team From: The Stewards Date: 05 September 2025 Time: 18:51

The Stewards have reviewed a report from the Race Director regarding Car 81 (Oscar Piastri) and have made the following determination:

Incident Details

  • No / Driver: 81 - Oscar Piastri
  • Competitor: McLaren Formula 1 Team
  • Time of Incident: 17:14
  • Session: Practice 2
  • Fact: Car 81 entered the fast lane during a red flag period before the re-start of the session was confirmed.

Infringement

  • Breach of Article 12.2.1 i) of the FIA International Sporting Code.
  • Non-compliance with Race Director's Event Notes (item 22.2, document 4).

Decision

  • Competitor: Reprimand.

Reason for Decision

  1. Evidence Reviewed: The Stewards examined video and timing evidence.
  2. Timeline: Car 81 was released from its garage at 17:13:50. However, the re-start of the session was only confirmed by Race Control on timing page 3 at 17:14:09. This clearly violated item 22.2 of the Race Director's Event Notes.
  3. Team Admission: During the hearing, the team admitted to making a mistake. They reacted to a "track clear" message instead of waiting for the message indicating the session's re-start time.
  4. Mitigating Circumstances: The Stewards acknowledged that, unlike similar incidents in Qualifying, this event occurred during Free Practice. Therefore, no significant sporting advantage was gained, making a reprimand an appropriate penalty.

Stewards' decisions are independent of the FIA and are based solely on relevant regulations, guidelines, and presented evidence.
